The question

Situation

A local theatre wants to attract new audiences. It can show more family movies or more independent films.

Task

Respond to the survey in about 150-200 words. In your response, choose ONE of the following options: Option A: The theatre should show more family movies. Option B: The theatre should show more independent films. Explain the reasons for your choice.

Sample answer

Linking words are highlighted: they show the structure a rater follows.

In my opinion, the theatre should show more family movies.

This is the stronger choice because it responds to a real need rather than simply adding something nice to have. Many people would notice the benefits of family movies almost immediately, especially those who depend on this service or place every week.

Another point is accessibility. Family Movies would make the situation easier for people with different schedules, ages, or responsibilities. A good public or workplace decision should consider the widest possible group, and this option does that better than independent films.

Although independent films could still be considered in the future, I do not think it should be the first priority right now. The available money and time should go toward the option with clearer everyday benefits.

Therefore, I would recommend family movies. It is a balanced choice that should create fewer complaints and stronger overall satisfaction. That should matter in the final decision.

Why it works

What you can measure in this answer, and what CELPIP raters mark.

  • The right length. 155 words: inside the required 150–200, in 5 paragraphs.
  • Clear links between ideas: “therefore”, “although”, “overall”, “because”. They make the answer easy to follow, which raters reward under coherence.
  • 5 paragraphs, each with its own job, so the reader can follow the answer at a glance.
