I strongly agree that grocery stores should be required to donate unsold food that's still safe to eat, for three main reasons. First, it's simply wrong to throw away good food while so many Canadians struggle to afford groceries. Food banks have been busier than ever in recent years, and many of the people lining up are working families. A box of slightly bruised apples or bread that's one day old is still perfectly nutritious, and it could make a real difference to someone's week. Second, it's better for the environment. When food ends up in a landfill, it breaks down and releases methane, which is a powerful greenhouse gas. Donating it means that all the water, energy and transportation that went into producing it aren't wasted. Third, a law would create a fair and consistent system. Right now, some stores donate generously while others throw everything out because it's easier. If every store followed the same rules, charities could plan regular pickups, and no company would be at a disadvantage. Some people worry about food safety and who's responsible if someone gets sick, and that's a fair concern. However, the law could include clear safety guidelines and protect stores that follow them in good faith. So overall, I believe a donation law would help people, protect the planet and make the system fairer for everyone.
