Format and scoring
| Skill | Listening |
|---|---|
| How it's scored | One mark for each correctly spelled word in the right form. |
| Weight (estimate) | About 29% of your listening score |
How to answer Write From Dictation
- 1Hold the sentence in your head as meaning, not sound.
- 2Type the key nouns and verbs first, then fill in small words.
- 3Check plurals, tense and spelling.
Common mistakes
- Missing small words such as the, a, of.
- Spelling errors, which lose the word.
- Hear chunks, not words: Your memory holds about four chunks at once, so group the sentence into meaningful phrases rather than trying to store each word separately.
- Keep the meaning, rebuild the grammar: Remember what the sentence is about, then use your knowledge of English to restore small words such as articles, prepositions and auxiliaries.
