CELPIP Writing Task 2: Responding to Survey Questions template

You choose one of two options in a survey and explain why.

The template

Pick one option and argue for it: four short paragraphs that hit every scoring area.

  1. 1In my opinion, the option you choose is the better choice for who it affects.
  2. 2The main reason is that reason 1. For example, specific example.
  3. 3Furthermore, reason 2, which means benefit.
  4. 4Although the other option has its advantage, I believe your option final benefit.

Worked example

Your city can build either a new public pool or a new library. Which should it choose?

In my opinion, a new library is the better choice for our community. The main reason is that it serves people of all ages all year round. For example, children can do homework there after school, and newcomers can join free English classes. Furthermore, a library costs less to run than a pool, which means more money is left for other services. Although a pool would encourage exercise, I believe a library would benefit far more residents.

Why it works

  • Choose only one option, and say so in the first sentence.
  • Specific, local examples lift your score more than general statements.
