Word counter for exam writing
Paste or type your answer and pick the task: the counter shows your words against that task's limit, plus sentences and paragraphs. IELTS gives a minimum only (150 for Task 1, 250 for Task 2), while PTE and CELPIP tasks have a range you must stay inside.

How words are counted
Every word and number counts once. Hyphenated words (well-known) and contractions (don't) count as one word, and 15% counts as one. Official counts can differ slightly, so aim to sit a few words inside the limit rather than right on it.

Questions
What happens if I go under the IELTS word count?
Under-length answers lose marks for Task Achievement or Task Response, because the examiner can't see a fully developed answer. Aim for 160 to 190 words in Task 1 and 260 to 300 in Task 2.
Can Summarize Written Text be more than one sentence?
No. It must be a single sentence of 5 to 75 words. Two sentences score zero for form, so the counter flags more than one sentence.
Is my writing saved or sent anywhere?
No. The counter runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent to our servers.
