IELTS band score calculator

Listening and Reading are marked out of 40 and converted to a band from 0 to 9. Your overall band is the average of the four skill bands, rounded to the nearest half band: an average ending in .25 rounds up to .5, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band.

Fill in all four skills to see your overall band.

How it works

  1. 1

Choose Academic or General Training. Reading uses a different conversion table for each.

  2. 2

Enter your Listening and Reading raw scores (correct answers out of 40).

  3. 3

Pick your Writing and Speaking bands, then read your overall band. For General Training you also see the CLB level for each skill.

Worked example

Academic: 31/40 in Listening is band 7 and 28/40 in Reading is band 6.5. With Writing 6 and Speaking 6.5, the average is 6.5, so the overall band is 6.5. If Writing were 6.5 instead, the average would be 6.625, which still rounds to 6.5.

Questions

How is the IELTS overall band rounded?

The four bands are averaged and rounded to the nearest half band. 6.25 becomes 6.5, 6.75 becomes 7, and 6.125 becomes 6.

Why does General Training Reading need more correct answers?

General Training Reading texts are easier, so the same band needs more correct answers. Band 6 needs about 23 in Academic Reading and about 30 in General Training.

Are these conversion tables exact?

They're the widely used guide. Each test version is graded for difficulty, so the cut-off for a band can move by a mark either way.

Which IELTS counts for Canada?

Express Entry and most Canadian immigration routes need IELTS General Training. The CLB levels shown here use IRCC's equivalency for General Training.
