Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: Parents should be held legally responsible for crimes committed by their minor children? Explain your position with specific reasons and examples.

Sample answer

Linking words are highlighted: they show the structure a rater follows.

I unequivocally disagree with the proposition that parents should be held legally responsible for crimes committed by their minor children. While parental influence is undeniably significant, individuals, even minors, ultimately possess agency and the capacity for independent decision-making. Holding parents solely accountable disregards a child's evolving autonomy. For instance, a teenager from a supportive home might still commit an offense due to external influences like peer pressure, an outcome often completely beyond a parent's reasonable control despite their best efforts and guidance. Furthermore, imposing strict legal responsibility on parents could foster fear and resentment within households, potentially straining the vital parent-child relationship. Parents might feel constantly compelled to report even minor infractions to protect themselves, breaking trust rather than fostering actual rehabilitation. While I acknowledge that parents certainly bear a moral and educational responsibility for raising their offspring, the legal system must differentiate between genuine negligence and the direct criminal acts of an individual. Ultimately, shifting legal culpability from the actual perpetrator to their parents undermines personal accountability and could create many more complex societal issues.
