Sample answer

Linking words are highlighted: they show the structure a rater follows.

I firmly believe that mandatory voting for all eligible citizens is essential for strengthening democratic societies and fostering greater civic engagement. Firstly, it significantly enhances governmental legitimacy. When every eligible individual votes, election outcomes truly reflect the collective will of the whole population, rather than just an active minority. Countries like Australia, which successfully implement mandatory voting, consistently see very high voter turnouts, thereby providing their governments with strong and clear mandates to govern effectively. Furthermore, this policy cultivates stronger civic responsibility among the general public. Requiring citizens to cast a ballot incentivizes them to become much more informed about important policies and candidates, ultimately leading to a much more educated electorate. This active participation greatly strengthens our democratic institutions over time. While some critics argue that forcing people to vote infringes upon their individual freedom, I firmly contend that the collective benefit of maintaining a truly representative democracy far outweighs this perceived constraint. Ultimately, mandatory voting serves as a vital mechanism for ensuring ongoing governmental accountability and fostering a genuinely inclusive and participatory democracy for everyone.
