5 IELTS Writing Task 2 tips
You write an essay responding to an opinion, argument or problem. At least 250 words; it counts for more than Task 1.
Tips
- 1
Name the question type
Opinion, discussion, problem–solution or two-part: each needs a different structure.
- 2
Answer every part
“Discuss both views and give your opinion” means three things, not one.
- 3
One clear position
State it in the introduction and repeat it in the conclusion.
- 4
Develop each idea
Explain why it's true and give an example. Lists of undeveloped ideas score lower.
- 5
Aim for 270 to 290 words
Enough to develop your ideas, with time to check.
Mistakes to avoid
- Not answering every part of the question.
- An unclear position in opinion essays.
