IELTS Writing Task 2 template

You write an essay responding to an opinion, argument or problem. At least 250 words; it counts for more than Task 1.

The template

“To what extent do you agree or disagree?” questions reward a clear, consistent position. This four-paragraph frame keeps your view visible from the first paragraph to the last, so you can spend your 40 minutes on ideas rather than structure.

  1. 1It is often argued that paraphrase of the statement, and this has become a widely debated issue.
  2. 2In my view, your position, because reason 1 and reason 2.
  3. 3The main reason I hold this view is that reason 1.
  4. 4For example, specific example supporting reason 1, which shows that link back to your position.
  5. 5A further consideration is that reason 2; in place or situation, example, so consequence.
  6. 6Admittedly, the strongest opposing argument; however, why it is weaker or limited.
  7. 7In conclusion, I firmly believe that your position restated in new words, since summary of both reasons.

Worked example

Some people believe that private cars should be banned from city centres. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is often argued that private vehicles should no longer be allowed in the centres of cities, and this has become a widely debated issue. In my view, such a ban is largely justified, because it would cut air pollution and make urban centres safer for pedestrians. The main reason I hold this view is that traffic is a leading source of harmful emissions in cities. For example, central London's congestion charge reduced traffic in the zone, which shows that limiting cars can improve air quality. A further consideration is that car-free streets are safer and more pleasant; in Copenhagen, large pedestrian areas attract shoppers and cyclists, so local businesses benefit. Admittedly, a ban could inconvenience elderly or disabled residents; however, exemptions and better public transport could easily address this. In conclusion, I firmly believe that city centres should be closed to private cars, since doing so would improve both public health and the quality of urban life.

Why it works

  • Task Response: a position stated in the introduction and kept throughout is what band 7+ means by “a clear position throughout the response”.
  • Coherence and Cohesion: one central idea per body paragraph, each opened by a topic sentence, matches the band 7 descriptor “presents a clear central topic within each paragraph”.
  • Lexical Resource: the frame is only a skeleton. Fill every slot with your own topic vocabulary, as examiners discount memorised phrases that are not linked to the question.
