CELPIP Speaking Task 3: Describing a Scene template

You describe a picture to someone who can't see it.

The template

Describe the picture so someone who can't see it could draw it: overview first, then place each detail.

  1. 1This picture shows the place and the overall situation.
  2. 2In the foreground, person or object is action, and detail.
  3. 3In the middle of the picture, person or object action or description.
  4. 4In the background, I can see detail, which reason it matters.
  5. 5Overall, it looks like the mood or what's happening.

Worked example

A park on a sunny afternoon: a family having a picnic, a man walking a dog, children on a playground.

This picture shows a busy park on a sunny afternoon. In the foreground, a family is having a picnic on a red blanket, and the father is cutting a sandwich. In the middle of the picture, a man in a blue jacket is walking a small brown dog. In the background, I can see children playing on a playground. Overall, it looks like a relaxed weekend afternoon.

Why it works

  • Use location words in every sentence: on the left, in the corner, behind.
  • Describe actions with the present continuous: is walking, are playing.
