The template
An Academic Task 1 report in four paragraphs. The overview is the line examiners look for first.
- 1The chart type illustrates what it measures in place between start and end.
- 2Overall, the biggest trend, while the main contrast or exception.
- 3Category A rose / fell from figure to figure, comparison with another category.
- 4By contrast, category B trend, reaching figure by end.
Worked example
A line graph of household recycling rates for paper, glass, metals and plastics, 2015 to 2025.
The line graph illustrates the percentage of household waste recycled for four materials between 2015 and 2025. Overall, recycling rose for every material, while plastics remained the lowest throughout. Paper was recycled most, rising from 62% to 81%, well ahead of glass, which climbed from 55% to 70%. By contrast, plastics increased only gradually, reaching 35% by 2025.
Why it works
- Never give an opinion in Academic Task 1.
- Group data into trends rather than listing every number.
- Aim for 170 to 190 words; the minimum is 150.
