5 IELTS Speaking Part 2 (Cue Card) tips
You get a topic card, one minute to prepare, then speak for up to two minutes.
Tips
- 1
One keyword per bullet
Use the preparation minute to note a keyword for each bullet, not sentences.
- 2
Tell a story
Past events with details (who, where, how you felt) are easier to talk about for two minutes.
- 3
Use the last bullet to extend
“Explain why…” is where you can keep talking with reasons and feelings.
- 4
Don't stop early
The examiner will stop you; keep adding detail until they do.
- 5
Practise with a timer
Two minutes feels long the first time. Practise until it doesn't.
Mistakes to avoid
- Stopping well before two minutes.
- Writing full sentences in the preparation minute.
