CELPIP Speaking Task 1: Giving Advice template

You give advice to a person in a situation.

The template

A five-step plan for Speaking Task 1. It fills 90 seconds without rushing.

  1. 1Hi name, I know the situation is a tough decision.
  2. 2If I were you, I would your advice.
  3. 3First of all, reason 1, with a detail.
  4. 4On top of that, reason 2, with a detail.
  5. 5So in the end, I really think restated advice. Good luck!

Worked example

Your friend Maria has been offered a better-paid job in another city, but she'd have to move away from her family.

Hi Maria, I know this move is a tough decision. If I were you, I would take the job. First of all, the higher salary would let you save for a home much sooner. On top of that, it's only a short flight away, so you can visit your family every month. So in the end, I really think this is a great opportunity. Good luck!

Why it works

  • Give one clear piece of advice, not a list of options.
  • Use the person's name: it shows you're speaking to them, which counts for task fulfillment.
